(Blog 17) Plans After Highschool

(Continued from our last post…)

The morning stayed busy between handing out stickers and waving at passing classmates, but once classes began Lena, Kylee, and Wix found themselves with a much welcomed quiet moment.

Eager to make use of the silence, Kylee relaxed her wings and plopped on the floor resting the back of her head against the wall, “So, what are we all doing after graduation? It’s coming up fast, you know.”

Wix smirked as she organized a neat row of stickers. “You mean besides our world tour of celebrating Lena’s homecoming victory?”

Lena rolled her eyes.

“For real, though,” Kylee pressed. “What happens after all of this? Life is going to be completely different after graduation.”

Lena hesitated, smoothing a crease in the tablecloth. “I’ve been thinking about going into political science, maybe something in leadership. My dad always says I have a knack for rallying people together.”

Kylee snorted. “That’s great, Lena. You’ve practically been running this school since sophomore year. You should totally do it.”

Wix raised her eyebrow and chuckled a little. “Good, I was hoping you didn’t say get married and have baby dragons. What about Robert? What is he planning to do?”

At the mention of his name, Lena’s caught herself too choked in the moment to speak. “He… he says he wants to enlist. Join the Queens’ war.”

“Wait. Seriously?!” Kylee loudly exclaimed as she leaned up attentively,

Lena nodded, her voice softer. “Shh…. Yeah. He’s been saying it for a while. Says he wants to do something honorable. He hasn’t told his mom or anyone else really. I get it, I really do, but…” She exhaled, glancing down as her jaw drooped heavily and her cheeks flushed. “My dad’s already out there, and it’s hard enough knowing he’s in the middle of it. I see what it does to my mom. I don’t love the idea of Robert heading off to the same place.”

Wix pulled Lena over into a full body, double wing wrapped hug. “Oh Lena. Have you told him how you feel?”

“I’ve tried, but it’s really important to him.” Lena sighed. “I don’t want to be the reason he doesn’t follow his dream, but I also don’t want to lose him.”

Kylee stood back up to huddle in and keep her voice low. “Do you think he’s going to propose after graduation?”

Lena’s eyes widened and she loudly yelped, “Kylee?!”

“I mean, come on, we’re all thinking it.”

Wix agreed. “She’s not wrong. Everyone already sees you two as the perfect pair and with what you’re saying, he really might before he leaves.”

Lena’s mind was now racing at the realization that her friends might be on to something she’d need to seriously consider. “We’ve talked about the future, but marriage? That’s huge. I don’t know. I want us to have choices, you know? Not be forced into something because of war, or expectations, or timing.”

Wix gave her a reassuring nod. “That’s a lot to think about. Whatever happens, Lena, you’ll figure it out. You always do.”

Kylee chimed in to lighten the mood, “You can always come walk the runways with me. I’m going into modeling after graduation. It’s going to be glorious.”

“That's a whole other conversation, Kylee.” Wix rebutted. And with that, the bell rang and students began making their ways back through the hall.
